The snowdrops and daisies are coming out and the crocuses and daffodils are not far away. Spring is here and so is the time for spring cleaning, but before you start you need to do some cleaning. With the following tips, decluttering will definitely be easier for you.

How to get started?

Actually, the beginning is quite "simple". We like to use the following metaphor: how do you eat an elephant? - Exactly, piece by piece.

So, if you want to start decluttering, you have to proceed accordingly: "one thing at a time". Because taking on too much is usually counterproductive to your motivation.

Phase 1:

First, decide which room you want to start in. In this room, choose one or more areas where you want to start.

Phase 2:

Now prepare 3 boxes:

  • Keep
  • Maybe (if you're still not sure whether to hold or give in)
  • Throw away/sell/give away

Phase 3:

Take the time to clear the entire area you have reserved. Divide the content into categories. For example, if you have your wardrobe in front of you:

  • Jackets
  • Long sleeve top
  • Short sleeve top
  • Trousers
  • Underwear, socks and pajamas

This phase is important to be able to clean sensibly. With this system, you can directly see what you have in excess. This should make it easier to "separate".

Phase 4:

Now start dividing everything into the three boxes. “Keep” and “throw away/sell/give away” will probably not be difficult for you. But what about “Maybe”?

Now think about why these items ended up in the "Maybe" box. Did you receive it as a gift or did it once cost a lot? These are often the reasons why it is difficult to part with certain items.

Try reviewing the entire "maybe" box with the following questions to make a final decision:

  • Why do I own this item?
  • What is its purpose?
  • When did I last use it?
  • Do I still like this item?
  • Would I buy the item again?

Step 5:

What can remain now has a permanent place.

Put away the things you want to keep, sorted by category. To avoid chaos, get into the habit of putting things back after use.

Where do I start?

Start where you can make a difference in the shortest time possible, i.e. where success is quickly visible. This will motivate you to continue.

The wardrobe, for example, is a good place to start. For the simple reason that clothes that are no longer beautiful or no longer fit can be eliminated easily and without thinking too much. In addition, in this area there are almost never souvenirs that are difficult to get rid of.

Reduce your clothing by only keeping what you like and makes you feel good.

If you don't have much time available, take care of the bathroom furniture, medicines or living room furniture, for example. Make sure you finish what you start. Unfinished work can cause unnecessary stress and have a counterproductive effect on motivation.

When will I be ready?

Maybe you're in the middle of your decluttering campaign and wondering when you'll be done.

Well, you probably don't want to hear it now, but you'll never really be done anyway! We would like to explain to you why. Maybe you're the type of person who cleans, tidies, and reorganizes the house once and then thinks, "it's all over."

But... Today's consumer society has reached a current peak from which it is difficult to escape. As a result, objects accumulate in every house that we don't really need and that sooner or later we will resell or dispose of. Our negligence is not always to blame. Remember that we are often given objects that we don't like, that we probably don't need and that we don't use.

So don't doubt yourself if you have emptied your entire house and six months later you find things you no longer need. This does not mean that you were inconsistent in your last action. Because tidying up is an ongoing process that fundamentally never ends. Because what is practical today does not necessarily have to be useful tomorrow.
