Organize your wardrobe and store your clothes correctly

Is your wardrobe bursting at the seams? You've probably already found yourself in this situation: you're spoiled for choice and you don't know what to wear today, not to mention the clothes you own. It's the right time to change this state of affairs, because in the transition from winter to summer we exchange warm clothes for cooler alternatives. With this 8-step plan, the chaos will finally be away from your wardrobe:

Plan your filing system

Before you start reorganizing your wardrobe, you need to think about what you want your organization system to look like. Why do you need a system? Only if you know exactly where you keep your clothes will you be able to find them even when you have little time in the morning before work. Think about where to store the following clothing:

  • Clothes that you wear regularly
  • Clothes you rarely use
  • New clothes you want to wear
  • Clothes that you have already worn but want to wear again before they go to the cleaners.
  • New shoes and frequently worn shoes
  • Rarely worn shoes

Do you share your wardrobe with your partner or a family member? Then think about how to best separate your wardrobe into sections for each person. Also ask yourself if you want to sort your clothes by certain categories, such as by color, type or occasion.

Prepare clothing

Have you thought about a system that fits perfectly into your living conditions? Now it's time to prepare your clothes. First of all, you should clean the clothes that you haven't washed in a while in the washing machine. Dirty clothes quickly transfer their odor to other clothes. Then you can start folding them or hanging them on hangers. Shoes should also be cleaned before storage. By the way, you can eliminate bad odors by putting tea bags in your shoes. If you want to store clothes or shoes in boxes, for example because you don't need them every day, you should always label the boxes. This way you can understand at a glance whether the clothes are for winter, for sport or for rain.

Store clothes correctly

Now it's time to sort your clothes. Pay particular attention to this phase and stick to the system you have planned to prevent the chaos from recurring immediately. Follow these tips and you will be sure to maintain order:

  • Store clothes you use often at eye level. This way you will avoid having to constantly reach for the upper shelf or rummage in the lower drawers.
  • For items that wrinkle easily, hang them on a hanger and leave enough space between each item.
  • Do you keep underwear and socks in a large drawer? Then use boxes that separate the drawer into individual compartments.
  • Do you have a lot of clothes that you can only wear in one season? To have a little more space in your wardrobe, you can use boxes to store unused clothes under the bed, in the cellar or in the attic.

Protect your clothes

Even though your clothes are now well organized, they are not protected at all. A big problem with clothes that you don't use regularly is dust. For shoes and clothes that can fold, lockable boxes are a good way to protect them from dust. Evening dresses and suits are best stored in garment bags, but lockable boxes not only protect against dust, but also against odors and moths. Of course, it is not possible to store all your daily clothes this way. For this reason, hang small lavender bags that make your clothes fragrant and prevent small moth holes. Do you store clothes from other seasons in the cellar or attic? Here, in addition to the dangers of insects, dust and bad odors, there is also high humidity that could cause clothes to moldy. Therefore, make sure that the boxes have a tight-fitting lid: For example, use boxes with a rubber seal, because they can be closed completely airtight.

Check your clothes occasionally

Do you have ten minutes to dedicate? Then take a look at your wardrobe or stored clothes and check the following points:

  • Are there any clothes you no longer wear?
  • Are all the items in the right place?
  • Do you find clothes that you have forgotten and would like to wear again?
  • Do you have to wash or iron some clothes because you can't wear them as they are?

Tidy up your clothes regularly

After some time, do you realize that the organizational system you have chosen is not for you? No problem, just adapt it to your needs again. The perfect time for this is the transition between winter and summer, because at that point you will have to rearrange the clothes stored in your wardrobe. To make this operation as quick as possible, you can also use a practical organization system in this case. Instead of storing all your clothes in one large box, divide them by category into different boxes and label them accordingly. At the start of the season, you can take piles of clothes out of boxes and put them away in your wardrobe.

Clothes preserved
When you take last season's clothes out of the cellar, you are often surprised to discover that you have completely forgotten which items you own. To avoid accidentally buying everything twice, you need to have an overview of your stored clothes. The best way to do this is to use clear, labelable boxes for storage. Do you want to document exactly which clothes you have stored? With the AppMyBox mobile application you can register your storage boxes and note the items stored in them. It is especially useful for storing clothes: You can upload photos and assign them to boxes.

In the wardrobe
Even the closet can quickly become a jungle full of surprises. You've already taken the first step to overcoming the chaos by sorting by category. A little tip to speed up getting dressed in the early morning: On Sunday evening, prepare the clothes for the entire following week. Alternatively, you can do it every evening and throughout the next day. You'll notice how much time you suddenly have on your hands in the morning before work.

Find the perfect solution for your daily life

You can plan and order all you want, but in everyday life your organization can suddenly become completely impractical. Do you always need a chair to reach an item of clothing? Then move those clothes to your eye level. Do other t-shirts fall out of the drawer when you only want to take one out? Hang your shirts on hangers. There is a solution for every problem. So don't lose patience, but always adapt your wardrobe to your living situation.
