Interview: Lovisa Lund

As a designer at Rotho I have the opportunity to participate in the entire product development process: from idea to production to sales spaces.

Wurenlingen (CH)

Junior Product Designer

September 2020

What was your starting position?

My manager, Marc Binder, contacted me directly when I was studying at the Umea Design Institute in Sweden. I started with a one-year internship that ended with a job offer. Now I work full time as a junior product designer.

What makes Rotho an interesting place to work?

Rotho is a great company for designers who want to go through the entire process of creating a product!

It is a smaller company that allows you to experience the entire product development process firsthand.

As a designer, I rarely have the opportunity to be involved in every part of the process.

At Rotho, one day you are at your desk, designing a new product, the next day you are in production making samples with the machinery.

What personal experiences/characteristics are important for your work?

I am an industrial engineer by training and currently work as a designer.

I believe it is useful to understand the general picture of the production process and at the same time dedicate yourself to design.

Not only do we have to make the final product desirable and useful to our customers, but we also have to consider the entire world of manufacturing, assembly and logistics before the product reaches many people's homes!

What is your favorite Rotho product and why?

Pagamalu.

I consider the entire product cycle. The user has the possibility of organizing their kitchen with lids that have different functions and, at the end of their life cycle, can disassemble each part and recycle it completely (Design for Disassembly).

Rotho is not necessarily considered a very attractive company. Do you agree with this statement?

I guess it depends on what you're looking for! Rotho is an interesting company for me, for many reasons: one of these is its size and its ability to make a big difference. I like the entrepreneurial spirit and the opportunity to work on many different projects: models, illustrations, shop windows and social media. We are also a diverse team, coming from many parts of the world, which makes us an evolved, modern and multicultural workplace.
